More Potty Training Tips
|
|
Multiple things prevent a child from wanting to potty train. Physical
problems, such as a urinary tract infection could be the cause, or
maybe a sudden change like divorce, or a new baby. The best thing to do
is be consistent, and if there is a problem try and fix it.
1. Physical Problems
On young children, particularly only a few years old, a urinary tract
infection could be preventing the child from wanting to potty train.
Your child may have a high fever, be irritable, and not want to eat. He
could also have a low fever, have nausea or vomiting, or be fine. If he
or she has a high fever and is sick for more than one day, take him or
her to the doctor to be checked for a bladder infection.
2. When Sick
While potty training your child might have times where she gets sick or
has some diarrhea, make sure she knows this isn’t her fault
and that you understand its just part of being a parent. You will have
to clean up accidents, and perhaps resort back to a pull up training
pant. Let her know this is only for when she is sick, and you want her
to feel better.
3. Juice and Water
You can limit the amount of juice he takes in while potty training. A
lot of drinks such as juice and soda may cause them to have to urinate
more, and therefore have accidents. Do not deprive him, just give
limits, and always offer water for when he is thirsty. If he is really
thirsty, he will drink it.
4. Set Rules
Set potty rules, and do not budge, especially on older children. Some
children, while potty training want to use every public restroom, and
do not actually use it. So, before leaving a restaurant and your home,
ask if anyone has to use the restroom, because this is the time.
5. Accidents
Some accidents are just that accidental others are purposeful. If the
child has an accident to simply get your attention, let your
displeasure be known and tell them that is unacceptable. Give the child
attention in other ways. True accidents happen with a new baby, change
in work schedule, and new people, so spend time with your child at the
end of the day and always throw in “Do you have to use the
potty?’
